The Orchard School

SMSC (Spiritual Moral Social Cultural) Development

At Orchard Infant School, we believe that children’s earliest experiences of school play a vital role in shaping who they become. Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development is central to our work and is rooted in how children learn, play, talk and grow together every day.

Because our children are in the early stages of their learning journey, SMSC is developed through secure relationships, clear routines, play‑based learning and adult role‑modelling, helping pupils to feel safe, valued and confident.

SMSC Through Our Infant Curriculum

Our carefully designed infant curriculum ensures that SMSC development is age‑appropriate, meaningful and practical.

Spiritual Development

We encourage children to be curious, reflective and imaginative. Through play, storytelling, outdoor learning and first‑hand experiences, children are supported to explore their feelings, develop self‑belief and experience awe and wonder in the world around them. This helps them begin to understand themselves, their emotions and how they learn best.

Moral Development

Children learn about right and wrong through clear expectations, consistent routines and discussion. Adults model kindness, fairness and honesty, helping children understand the impact of their actions. Stories, role‑play and everyday classroom situations give pupils opportunities to practise making good choices and taking responsibility in ways that are meaningful to young children.

Social Development

Developing positive relationships is a key focus in infancy. Children are taught how to share, take turns, listen to others and work together. Strong partnerships with families, parent workshops and community involvement reinforce social learning, helping children feel part of a wider community and understand their role within it.

Cultural Development

Through stories, celebrations, music, art and curriculum themes, children are introduced to different cultures, traditions and beliefs. Experiences are carefully chosen to be accessible and relatable, helping children recognise similarities and differences and develop respect for others from an early age.
